This
hand helped Larry Cohen and David Berkowitz win the National
Open Pairs in Reno, Nevada last month. Cohen, as North, thought
his partner might be going for 800. East thought he'd give
the master of the Law of Total Tricks a taste of his own
medicine by passing West's negative double. South thought
he was going down one, for that magic 200 to East-West. But
after winning two top clubs, East switched to the wrong suit
at trick three. He led a spade and Berkowitz won in dummy
to discard his jack of diamonds on the jack of clubs. Berkowitz
eventually lost two trump tricks to score +730.
On
a high level, West's second club play should be suit-preference
between spades and diamonds. West played the 3, so this called
for a diamond switch.
Have
a nice weekend!.
