Opening
lead: K
At
both tables in the recent Spingold Teams final in Long Beach,
California, East led a third round of spades at trick three,
and
South ruffed low in hand, discarding a club from dummy. At
one
table, declarer tried to draw trumps. After two rounds, he
got the
bad news and led a club to the king. West won and played a
fourth
spade to set the contract.
At
the other table, declarer, Zia, ruffed the third round of
spades
and led the 8.
West did not go up with the ace, so declarer got
through his tenth trick and then drew trumps and cashed his
diamonds.
East
can also defeat 4
by shifting to his singleton diamond at trick
three. This is a better and simpler defense. It's better because
it
defeats 4
even when declarer has six trump, as long as partner has
a minor-suit ace.
