This popular convention among tournament
partnerships defines all your sequences after
1NT rebids.

2 = game invitational
2 = game forcing
anything else = weak

As with any convention, good judgment helps.
Here West holds only 8 HCP, but they are
aces within a 5-5 shape. Therefore, West can
bid upgrade to 2, invitational check-back,
and then bid again over partner's 2 rebid,
because the 9-card fit is established. Probably
West should bid 4 over 2, but even 3 might
elicit an acceptance from East, who has prime
cards. Notice that 4 plays better from partner's
side, because diamonds can't be led through the
king.
