Are you aware that when you bid the fourth-suit
forcing, partner's preference at the two level is
usually a doubleton?

If West held three spades, he would have either
(1) raised to 2 immediately with a minimum hand,
or (2) jumped to 3 over 2 with a strong hand.

When you force partner to bid something, he must
jump to show real support.

East's 3 bid was forcing, and the partnership is
forced to at least 4.

Tip: Even if you play fourth-suit forcing to game,
once you agree a minor, you should be able to stop
in 4 of the minor.
