Al
Roth's addition to transfer bids over 1NT are:
Transfer
to a major and bid one step =
game force with
that major
Transfer
to a major and bid a new suit at the
3 level
= not
forcing
This
convention allows you to show both forcing
to game and
invitational to game hands with a
five-card major. In today's
example
you can see
how nicely it can work. Playing standard transfer
methods, East would transfer to hearts, but then
must pass
2 with
only 6 HCP.
The
convention would also work well when West
holds three hearts
and
a big club fit; for example,
with Axx, Kxx, Jxx, AKxx, he
could
picture the
big
fit over responder's 3 bid, and he would
bid 4.
Using
this convention, to invite game with five spades without
another five-card suit, you must start with 2 Stayman
and rebid 2.
