This
allows the 1NT opener to judge his hand. The
singleton
rebid is used by responder after Stayman,
at the three
level. Any three-level rebid shows
shortness and a game
force. It could be a 4-4-4-1
pattern or a 5-4-3-1 or 5-4-4-0
pattern as well.
In
this system, if responder wishes to show a long
minor suit
and a 4-card major, he must start with
a transfer to the
minor and then bid the major.
On
today's auction, West rebids 3NT over 3H,
because of his
strong heart holding. But let's
switch his majors to this:
K
Q J
Q
3
A
J 9 4 3
Q
8 3
Now
he bids 4,
to show his long suit and no interest
in 3NT. Whether East-West
reach the perfect-fitting
slam or stop
in 5 making
six, they will have done
well to avoid 3NT.
