This
bid is used in a competitive sequence to ask
partner to
choose a trump suit at the six level.
Without interference,
you can usually locate the
best trump suit. But with interference,
it can
sometimes be difficult. Here East knew the
partnership
had enough power for slam, but he
couldn't be sure what
the best trump suit was.
So he bid 5NT. West chose hearts,
his good
six-card suit, and this was the best spot.
Another
point: After the 4 bid,
East might have
passed to hear more from partner. But he
couldn't
be sure the pass was
forcing. If he had passed,
and West understood it was forcing,
West would bid
5,
and East would be in a similar position, wanting
to bid
slam without knowing what the best trump
suit was.
