It's
impossible to say whether North should use
Stayman with
his 4333 shaped hand. Personally,
we usually prefer a jump
to 3NT with this type of
hand. But as you can see, looking
at the
South
(2) hand, 4 is
a better contract, while
3NT is better facing South (1).
Some
partnerships use the 4333 Stayman
convention to solve this
dilemma. The jump to
3 over
1NT is reserved for a 4333 shaped
hand with a four-card
major. Opener now has
a choice
of showing his major or not, depending
on his shape. With
South (1), he rebids 3NT,
but with South (2) he rebids
3.
