In a close semi-final match in the Bermuda
Bowl, my partner Bobby Wolff, overcalled 1
on his four-card suit rather than passing or
bidding 1NT. It's not clear what would have
happened after 1NT, since South would bid
2 and I might bid only 2. If Wolff had
passed 1, I doubt I would have thrown in
a 1 bid over South's 1 response. In
short, his 1 overcall made life very easy.

Today's tip is not to be shy about overcalling
on a good four-card suit if no other call is
appealing. This is especially true when your
alternative is 1NT and you have only one
stopper in the suit opened.
