Most players would bid 1 over
1 without
giving
this a second
thought. An interesting
tactic, however, is to make a weak
jump
overcall with the South hand. Since partner
is a passed hand,
this
heavy preempt is less
likely to lose a game contract in your
direction and more likely to gain when
East-West overbid.
Here 2 pushes
West
into a 2NT bid and East raises. As long as
North leads
a
spade, the contract is down
two or three tricks. After a
1 overcall,
East-West will have a good chance to stop
in a club partscore,
scoring 130.
