As a passed hand, East is very unlikely to hold
a club suit that he wishes to bid by himself at
the five level. So his 5 bid is a lead-directing
call on the way to 5. On this particular deal,
the bid worked spectacularly, because only a
club lead from the West hand defeated 5.

The question is whether East can make this
call if he is not a passed hand. Since (we think)
your are more likely to hold support for partner
and a lead-director than an independent club
suit, it's right to use the meaning of 5 or 5
as a lead-directing bid. But this should be
discussed with your partner.
