The "book" says you must open the bidding
with the West hand. Have you ever considered
passing with a 4-4-4-1 shape hand and 12 or
13 points? There are many advantages to this
strategy. One of them is that the opponents
will climb to game and you will double. Another
is that the opponents will bid your short suit
and you will double, describing three suits with
one call (rather than opening the bidding and
having to make two more bids to describe
your three-suited hand).

The result at the table on this hand was 500
points to East-West. Who says that the first
to open the bidding has the advantage?
