For years I have been saying to bid two
with six.
That is, when you hold a six-card
suit, don't overcall at
the
one level when
you can jump overcall at the two level.
This
applies whenever you have less than
an opening bid (but does
not apply when
you're vul against not). It's true that you
could miss a game
by bidding two instead
of one, but the preemptive effect
on the
opponents more than makes up for
this.
On
this hand, from an OKbridge game last
month, I was South
and bid 2 over
East's
1.
We missed a game and still won 3
imps for +170, just for
buying the partscore.
If my partner
had bid 4,
we would have
been plus 420 on the magic fit. If I had
overcalled 1,
West would have jumped
to 3,
preemptive, and North would
probably have scraped up a
3 bid
(competitive,
since he could bid 3 to
invite
game). East would then bid 4,
which
would probably buy the contract.
