The
late Harry Fishbein used to bid 3NT with hands that
contained
a
four-card major but included a strong doubleton.
He
said that too
many times Stayman will land you in the
wrong contract,
because so
much of your strength is in your
short suit.
On
this layout, 4 goes
down, but 3NT is easy. There
are no
guarantees, and it could backfire
if you don't use Stayman, but
according
to Harry, this was a good
bidding idea.
