East must lead a diamond to hold the contract to 11 tricks. Otherwise partner can score 12 tricks!

The problem was what to bid at your first turn.

The winning answer is (c).

The cuebid of 2 asks partner to bid a four-card major. Your plan is to raise, inviting him to game. Though this may look very aggressive, it isn't. This hand brings out an important principle of competitive bidding: When most of the defensive highcards are concentrated in one of the opponent's hands, your side can make more tricks than usual.

Here the king of spades is a favorite to be onside and the ace of hearts is likely to be with West as well. Partner will win the opening lead of a diamond and play back a diamond. Someone must do something nice now for him. Eventually he will go to dummy (your hand) and lead a heart toward his hand, win the jack of hearts with the queen and duck one on the way back. This way he loses only one trump trick. What a partner!

The bid of 1 is wrong, because: (1) partner may pass, and (2) if you get another chance to bid, you'll have to bid spades, which is higher than hearts. A more economical approach is to bid 1 first. But this is also wrong here, because you are too strong! Partner will pass 1 and you will miss a game and play in the wrong strain, spades instead of hearts.

The bid of 2 and 2 are also wrong because, though they are invitational, if you bid the wrong one, where partner has only three-card support, he may pass and you will play the wrong contract.

The jump cuebid of 3 is interesting. But it shows a singleton diamond with support for all three suits.

Congratulations to everyone who found the 2 cuebid.
