Opening lead: A

Today's hand is from this year's NEC championships
in Yokohama.

After the ace of diamonds and a diamond ruff, East
returned a low spade (the indicated defense),
playing partner for king-doubleton of spades
and only five diamonds. West had to apologize.
He was very sorry he hadn't made the prosaic
lead of the king of spades. His ace-of-diamonds
lead was, to put it nicely, too brilliant.
