Opening
lead: 3
Jim
Borin, one of Australia's star players, passed
away last
month.
Jim showed me this hand last
year. He was North. His partner
covered
the 3
lead with dummy's 4 and East forgot to ruff the
trick! South
decided East must hold queen fourth
or fifth of trumps,
so he cashed
the king of spades
and finessed the jack to West's queen.
West led
another heart. This time East was on the ball and
ruffed.
The defense
also scored a club trick for
620 to N-S.
But
this was a flat board. At the other table West
also led a
heart,
East ruffed with the 4, returned
a club to partner and received
a
second ruff. Jim
thought the hand was rare, because how many
times do
you see a 4 win the first trick? In this
case, there were two "4's" that
won the first trick!
Not only that, but it didn't matter who
won
the
trick - it was the same result.

a nice weekend! |
