Opening
lead: 10
The
usual bid with the North hand over 2NT would
be 3NT, since
North
has raised spades with 3-card
support. But in last month's
Bermuda
Bowl (in a
match between China and Norway) Geir Helgemo
wanted
to
describe his short hearts (albeit a
doubleton). When he bid
3,
his partner, Tor
Helness, bid 4.
East
won the first trick with the heart ace and
continued with
the
jack. Helness won the king,
led a diamond to the queen and
crossruffed: ace
of diamonds, diamond ruff with the 6, heart
ruff
with the 9, ace of clubs, diamond ruff in hand
and heart ruff
with
the Q. He lost only to the
ace of hearts and two club tricks
to make
his
Moysian fit game. At the other
table, 3NT went
down.
