When
this hand was played back in 1957,
Edith Kemp (now Edith
Freilich) jumped to
6,
a premature sacrifice against the
vulnerable
game North-South. But South
had too good a hand to simply say
double,
and he decided to bid 6.
This would have
made after a diamond lead,
which Ann
Burnstine (Edith's sister) knew was a
hopeless lead
(since
her partner held
length in diamonds).
Ann
had to choose between the black suits
and selected clubs,
perhaps
using the old
rule clubs against slams. Declarer
finessed
and went
one down. Notice that 6 by
North
is laydown, and if Edith had bid a
little less,
North-South might have had room to explore
that
contract. Another idea is for East to bid
6 to
direct the club lead.
This is a good idea,
except for one thing....if she had bid
6,
chances
are the opponents would have
doubled her instead of bidding
6.
Or
perhaps worse: Over 6,
South can bid 6
and
North might bid
and make 6!
Have
a nice weekend.
