Extra quiz question: Can any lead stop declarer from taking 13 tricks? (Answer at conclusion.)

This slam requires a dummy reversal. Ruff the opening diamond lead (nice play) and lead a spade to dummy. Ruff a second diamond and lead a second spade to dummy. Then ruff a third diamond with the ace or king of hearts. Lead a club to the jack and ruff a fourth diamond with your remaining heart honor. Then lead your last trump to dummy and hope the trumps divide 3-2. Then cash three more club tricks, discarding a diamond and spade.

It might be important to use dummy's spade honors as your first two entries to dummy for ruffing the second and third diamond, because if someone has both a doubleton diamond and doubleton spade, he can discard a spade on the third round of diamonds if you don't use the spade entries first.

Answer to extra quiz question: Amazingly enough, there is no lead that stops 13 tricks, because declarer can always reach dummy three times with a spade, heart and club entry to ruff three diamonds (one low and two high), draw trumps, and cash clubs, squeezing West in spades and diamonds for his 13th trick.

Have a nice weekend!
