Opening
lead: A
This
week's hand of the week is from a Bol's Tip by Andrew Robson:
Play a preemptor who leads his suit for a singleton trump.
Usually a
preemptor has a singleton. If it's outside of trumps, he
usually
leads it. If he leads his own suit instead, he probably has
a
singleton trump.
On
this theory, South should play West for a singleton heart.
At
trick two, he leads a spade to the king, takes a diamond
discard on
the king of clubs, and leads the jack of spades for a finesse.
If
East covers, South wins the ace, leads one high trump and
then goes
to dummy and finesses to the 9 of hearts. If East doesn't
cover the
jack of spades, declarer takes a first-round finesse in hearts,
leading to the 9. South hopes West's singleton trump is not
the ten!
Here's
another tip for when you're on opening lead: Don't lead
unsupported aces!
