In
real life, West passed and North bought the contract
in
4,
down
two. West thought he didn't quite have
enough to risk a 5 bid.
A
good convention over Namyats or any artificial preempt
(that
shows
a specific suit) is to play double as a light
takeout double
of the
suit shown (not the suit bid). Using
this convention, West
could
double 4 as a light takeout
double of spades. It's relatively
risk
free, since the
opponents will probably not want to play
in 4 doubled.
On
this hand, East will cuebid 5 over 4, looking for
the right
slam, and you will score up 920 or 940 in 6.
