An
opening bid of 4 shows
a good 4 opening
and
an opening bid of 4 shows
a good 4
opening.
A 4 or
4 opening
bid shows a weak
preempt.
By using Namyats (Stayman spelled
backwards),
North knows
to pass 4,
since
partner cannot hold a solid heart suit plus an
outside
ace.
There
are lots of variations of this convention.
Here's one:

The
4 bid
shows a solid heart suit, with or
without an outside ace
or king. Responder bids
4 to
play there. A bid of 4 shows
slam
interest, needing a solid suit plus an ace for
opener to
bid past the
game level.
