When today's hand was played in an international
tournament last month, most West players led a
spade, allowing declarer to take at least 10 tricks.
(There is a squeeze for 11 tricks, if declarer finds it.)

At a few tables, however, East opened the bidding
2, showing hearts and a minor, 4-to-11 points.
South doubled and West bid 2NT asking for the
minor (he was planning to bid 3 next to invite
game). East bid 3 and South bid 3NT. West
decided to defend and led a low heart to defeat
the contract.

Two-suited 2 or 2 openings are popular outside
of the USA, where many pairs also use Multi 2 to
show a weak two-bid in a major (a convention that
complements the two-suited 2 and 2 openings).
These are a lot of fun and often very effective! But
watch the vulnerability.
