It's
difficult to say what South should bid over 2NT,
which
has a wide range. Does North hold a red king?
Does he hold
two spades?
A
very popular convention in the tournament world of
bridge
is cheaper minor, double negative. It means
that
after a 2 opening
bid, followed by a rebid of 2 or
2,
responder bids 3 to
say he has a very poor
hand, and after a 3 rebid
by opener, showing a strong
two-bid in clubs, responder's
double negative is 3.
On
today's example, North would bid 3 over
2 to
show
the poor hand and South would probably bid 3NT,
hoping
to take nine tricks.
Three
tips when playing this convention:
(1) The 2NT rebid by responder now promises
a few
points.
(2) If opener rebids 3 over
2,
showing a strong two-bid
in diamonds, responder's double negative
is 3NT, while
3 or
3 remain
as natural bids (showing a five-card
or longer suit).
(3) With a long club suit and mild values,
responder
should stretch to respond 3 over
2,
because he
knows he might not be able to show the clubs on
the next
round.
