This
convention has become very popular with
tournament players.
The jump to 4 or
4 over
an
opponent's weak two-bid shows that suit plus
the other
major, usually 5-5 shape. As you
can
see on this hand, East-West have an easy time
reaching
5.
But without this convention, it
would be very difficult
to reach the top spot.
In
the old days the jump to 4 of a minor over
a
weak two-bid showed a very long minor and a
hand
too
strong for an overcall at the three
level. If you play
Roman Jumps, you can't jump
to 4 or
4 with
a one-suited hand, so you'll
need to play next week's convention
to
handle
this: the cuebid of RHO's suit. More on this
