This
convention complements last week's
Roman Jumps, where a
jump to 4 or
4
over
an opponent's weak two-bid shows
that suit and the missing
major. With a hand
where you
might have jumped to 4 or
4
in
the old days, showing a strong hand and
a solid suit, you
cuebid at the three
level.
This cuebid asks partner to bid 3NT with
a stopper
in their suit. The convention
applies whether the opening
bid is at the
two level or the one level.
In
today's example, East's 3NT bid does
not promise an ace
on the outside, but
you're entitled to have a little luck,
no?
Besides, 3NT is often a gamble in these
situations.
Here if South leads the ace
of spades and finds the club
shift, the
contract is down one. But South might
shift
to hearts, and then declarer takes
nine tricks. If South
finds a club opening
lead, you can either blame Bridgetoday.com
for telling you
about the convention or
order a double vodka on ice.
PS.
If you switch the North and East cards,
the convention
is also quite effective.
North, holding Q-8-7-6 of spades,
would
bid 4 over
the 3 cuebid,
and East would
bid 5 on
the 10-5-4 of diamonds, knowing
his partner held solid
diamonds!
