The
splinter bid is a favorite convention
among duplicate and
tournament players.
But the auction presented is always
a
cause for concern. Is 4 over 1 a
splinter? Or is it
a natural call, a long
heart suit and a weak hand? The
jump to 4 over 1 as a natural bid
is quite useful, so
we suggest you find
another way to splinter when you hold
shortness in hearts.
One idea is to play
3NT as a splinter
in the other major.
Another idea is to use delayed
splinters,
where 3NT over 1 shows a splinter in
any suit, and opener
then bids 4 if he
wants to ask where it is (responder then
bids the short suit,
4 or 4, or bids 4
with shortness in clubs).
