There
are many variations of the cuebid,
depending on the bidding
level and context
of the auction. The Asking-for-a-Stopper
Cuebid (perhaps a
simpler name would be
the asking
cuebid), applies at the three level.
On today's auction,
East bid 3, asking West
to bid 3NT if he held a spade
stopper. Switch
West's black suits (giving West the Q-2
of
spades) and 3NT is the best contract. (West
would have
to bid 3NT with a half-stopper
but that might
be West's best option.)
Notice
that West also cuebid on this auction.
His 2 bid was simply
showing a strong
hand and had nothing to do with spades
whatsoever. The 2 bid
was a Strength-
showing cuebid, which
is used commonly
in response to partner's overcall. After
East
bid 3, West bid his diamonds followed by
5. This
nice picture bidding made East
appreciate his
working values in the minors,
and East made a very trusting
bid of 6.
East was Eric Rodwell and West was Jeff
Meckstroth,
one of the world's best
partnerships. They demonstrated
here that
you can't rely only on conventions - good
hand
evaluation is essential to good bidding.
