BRIDGE MOVIE #20

West

East

It's after midnight, and you are staked out near the window of a
smoky bridge club on Broadway, waiting for the drug deal to take
place in the street below. Meanwhile, you pick up your best hand of
the night and RHO ruins it with a 3 opening.

What do you do?

You might cuebid 5, but will you ever get the information you would
need to bid 7? So you bid 6, ending the auction. The spade 2 hits
the table and you see:

East plays the jack of spades and you win the trick. Then you draw
three rounds of trumps as West shows out on the third round with a
low diamond. What is your next play?

You lead the ace of diamonds. It costs you nothing to play a diamond
honor and you may get some information. You do! East shows out,
discarding a spade. East glares at West with daggers in his eyes.
West says, How was I supposed to know you was void? Why don't you
make a Lightner double?

What is your next move? Can you guarantee this slam no matter where the queen of clubs is? Can you picture West's original distribution? Meanwhile, outside the window you notice a suspicious movement. You take out your gun.

You can do it, Popeye! You know West's shape: 1-2-7-3. So you cash
the ace and king of clubs, discarding ... the king of diamonds! Then
you ruff a club. Since clubs are 3-3, the queen is gone now, and you
lead the 5 of diamonds toward dummy. West wins the queen and returns
a diamond, allowing you to discard two spades on two high clubs. The
full hand was:

Suddenly you see the drug dealer below. West screams at East: If you
double, I lead a diamond and we beat him!
East screams at West: No
we don't! He takes the spade shift, plays all his red cards and
squeezes me in the blacks
.

You simultaneously shoot at the drug dealer and miss, fill in 1430 on
the score pad (forgetting about the 150 honors), and spill your
coffee. You're mostly upset about the coffee....
