I
made 4 doubled on this one when East
discarded at trick
one. I won
the ace of
diamonds and led a heart, so I was able to
discard
a club
on a heart honor and ruff one
diamond in dummy. To beat me,
East had
to ruff the lead. He would then score a
second ruff plus
the two
major-suit aces.
East didn't ruff because he thought that
his
partner
had led from the ace-king of diamonds
and that I held the
ace of
hearts.
You
can play a lead convention such as ace
from ace-king or Rusinow
leads to avoid
this kind of problem. But my
tip today
doesn't
require a conventional lead. It's simply
commonsense:
When
you lead a suit that
partner may be void in, and you hold
the
ace,
lead the ace. In other words, East
should know West doesn't
hold the
ace of
diamonds, otherwise West would lead it ...
unless
he likes to
create problems for his
partner!
