Opening
lead: 6
Readers
of my column should have gotten this one
right. I was West
and we bid those spades three
times, but my partner, Bobby
Wolff,
offered 3NT
as an alternative game contract and how right
he
was. I
would have gone down in 4 immediately
after a heart lead
from North.
But he made 3NT.
He won the heart lead from South, led a
spade to
dummy and ran the 10 of diamonds (playing the
9 under it).
North
covered the next diamond lead,
but Wolffie won the queen
and played
king of
spades, jack of spades. He now had 9 tricks:
3 spades,
1
heart, 4 diamonds and a club.
My
tip is: Think about playing 3NT, even when you
have
a major-suit fit.
