When
I was West in this hand from a Bermuda
Bowl round-robin
match, I
passed it out. I like
to bid when it's close, but my only
possible
call at this point is double, which is for takeout.
Sure,
my partner
could convert to penalty, but
he's not likely to do so with
four
spades. So we
defended 4, undoubled, and looked like saps,
as we
defeated it three tricks for +150.
Meanwhile, we were cold
for 3NT
our way ...
except for one thing, you have to guess the
diamond
king.
And guess what? At the other
table where they reached 3NT,
they
didn't
guess the diamond king - down two.
We
won 6 imps for just sitting there, and my tip
is this:
You can't
do two things with one call.
The delayed double is takeout,
not
general
strength. So if you don't have a takeout double,
grit your
teeth and pass. It may work out OK.
