I
was West on this hand, partnered by Mike
Lawrence in a
Spingold
match a number of
years ago. Obviously, my pass of 3 was
predicated
on a different hand for East. I
thought he held something
like 10-11
points
with five or six hearts and three diamonds.
One rule
of thumb
I could have used is: When
in doubt, keep the bidding open.
In that
case,
I would bid 4, allowing him to pass if he held
the
hand I
expected. Another rule of thumb,
from East's point of view,
is: Don't
make a bid
that partner may pass when you must force. In
that case,
he would bid 3, a cuebid, 100%
forcing.
My
tip today is for serious partnerships
that want
to improve their
performance.
Most longterm partnerships have lots of
system notes
that deal with non competitive
sequences. But it's just as
important
to
discuss competitive auctions.
