I
was West on this occasion. My partner's 1
bid
was totally artificial, nothing to do with
hearts. When
I heard South's
2 bid,
I was very
happy to double for penalty; I had no
idea we had
a nine-card heart fit.
Declarer,
Bobby Levin, ruffed my lead and
carefully played ... clubs.
If he had led a trump,
he would have lost control and gone
down - I
would have been able to cash the A-K-Q
of
spades and continue hearts, eventually
tapping
him out. But when he led clubs, and then
diamonds,
my trumps were shortened first,
and all I could take was five trump tricks. We
went minus
470.
It's
an amazing hand, but there are two lessons.
First is to
play carefully when you're doubled, like
Levin did. Second
tip is this: Try to interfere over
strong-club auctions
- even when you run into a
trump stack, it may work!
