When
I held the West hand in last year's Bermuda
Bowl final,
I led a trump. My partner won the ace
and returned a trump.
Look at all those club ruffs
we were stopping. Declarer
won the second trump
lead in dummy and called for the jack
of diamonds,
running it when East played low. The 10-5
of hearts
were discarded on dummy's fourth and fifth diamonds
and a
club was later ruffed in dummy. Making five,
and our score
was minus 690.
It's
true that my partner could have switched to
hearts
after
winning the ace of trump, but that
would have backfired
if declarer held something
like QJTxxx, A9x, x, xxx. My
trump lead started
the defense rolling ... in the wrong
direction.
My
tip is this: Before you lead a trump against a
game
contract, make sure you have all the other
suits
covered.
