You need a 4-3 break to win three tricks. If the king
is third on your left, both lines of play work. If the king
if fourth on your right, neither line will work. That leaves
two possibilities: king third on your right or king fourth
on your left. Which is more likely.

King fourth is more likely than king third, so the finesse
is correct.
