Opening lead: 2

Play the 8 when declarer leads the queen on the
first round. Declarer may think you have the 10-8
doubleton and next play the jack. If he does this,
you will score two spade tricks.

If you win the queen with the king, declarer will
next cash the ace and finesse your 10. If you duck
the spade by playing the 4, declarer has no option
but to play the ace next, because he can't do anything
about K-10-8 remaining in the West hand.

At imps, after East plays the 8 at trick one, declarer
should next lead low toward the A-7-6, planning to
put in the 6 if West follows low. At matchpoints, he
may play for the overtrick by leading the jack, and
you'll defeat the game.

The only way for
you to make this
defensive play at the
table is to memorize
the combination
K-10-8-x behind
the ace. When
declarer finesses,
you play the 8 without
thinking about it.
