West should have bid 4 over 3. The first
cuebid of the opponent's suit is a slam try
and does not promise a control there. But
the worst bid was 6. East bid his hand
twice (at least), a common error.

He had a minimum hand for his 3 bid.
He then cuebid the ace of clubs, implying
support for diamonds. When he heard 5,
he should have passed.

The 5 bid could not be a cuebid, unless
West was a masochist.
