One of the least known strategies in bidding
is to jump overcall
rather than overcall. This
is especially true when partner
is a
passed
hand. The jump takes up space from the
opponents,
stopping
them from making
intelligent game tries. For example, on
this
hand if
West bids only one spade, North bids
2 and South can invite
game,
which North
will reject.
In
fact, game is makeable, since the queen
of hearts comes
down
doubleton. But the 2
bid
had an additional effect. South played for
West to hold a singleton heart, because of his
jump. He won
the spade
lead, led a heart to
the king and finessed hearts throught
East.
The
result was down one, 100 points to
East-West.
