Usually if your side is off the queen of trump plus a key card (an ace or the king of trump), you stay out of slam. But have you ever considered the percentages when you have a nine-card fit? When you hold the jack of trump, you have a 53% chance of bringing home the suit without a loser, and when you hold the 10 as well, you have a 58% chance to avoid a loser. Any slam above 50% is a good one.

In the case of a preemptive jump overcall, your chances are even better, because you plan to play the overcaller for a singleton in your trump suit.
