The
sequence 1-2 often presents opener with
a difficult rebid.
Some players would rebid 2
with the West hand,
not wanting to declare the
notrump. As you can see,
on today's layout,
East is better off being the declarer
in 3NT,
because he protects hearts (in case the ace
is
with South).
Some
players would not rebid 2 with the West
hand, because
they treat this bid as a reverse,
showing
a strong hand with five diamonds and
four spades. These
players might rebid 2NT,
despite the heart weakness,
simply to describe
a balanced hand. Some would rebid
2, to show
a minimum hand, even though there are only
four
cards in the suit.
One
idea to resolve the problem is to play that
a rebid of
2 shows any hand with five or more
diamonds. Then other
rebids, such as 2, denies
five diamonds and does not
show or deny extra
strength. A second partnership method
is to
rebid 2 on all minimum hands, regardless of
diamond
length. Then other bids show extra
values.
