When this hand was played in a world
championship Mixed Teams
event, at one
table West bid 3NT and North led the
jack
of diamonds. West won the first trick with
the
ace and led the queen of clubs. North
won and led the
10 of diamonds, defeating
the contract by two tricks.
Nice lead, but
West failed to give partner a chance
to play
the hand from the right side. At
the other
table, West bid 3 over
3,
a probe for
3NT. (The 3 bid
did not necessarily show
anything in diamonds.) East
rebid 3NT and
South led a diamond. East won in
hand with
the queen and knocked out the ace of clubs
to take nine tricks.
Note
that if East did not hold the queen of
diamonds, he would
rebid 3 or
3,
and
West could still take a stab at 3NT from
his side.
West has nothing to lose by bidding
3 on
the way. Also, if you play East's
2-3 sequence
forcing, it would still pay
for West to bid 3 in
an attempt to play the
hand from the other side.
